The Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium (LCSC) promotes September as Storm Drain Tagging Month. All month long volunteers and LCSC members will tag storm drains in neighborhoods around Lexington County with a marker bearing “NO DUMPING-DRAINS TO WATERWAYS”.
As part of the effort, LCSC is encouraging local groups of at least 2 but no more than 4 participants to help. Storm drain tagging kits will be made available on a first-come, first-serve basis for groups interested in this service project. Each “clean stream team” volunteer will receive a specially designed T-shirt and a chance to win a gift bag for successful completion of their assignment.
Our storm drainage system is connected to local water bodies and does not get treated at a waste water treatment plant. As stormwater runoff flows over the land, it picks up pollutants and deposits them into creeks, rivers, and lakes. Tagging a storm drain takes only a few minutes and is a simple way to inform the public that anything that enters the storm drain ends up in our waterways.
Please volunteer to tag storm drains in a Lexington County neighborhood and be part of our “clean stream team”!
How To Participate in Storm Drain Tagging Month
- Get a buddy or an enthusiastic group (2 to 4 people) willing to help protect our beautiful waterways from illegal dumping of pollutants into storm drains.
- Select a neighborhood in Lexington County in which to tag storm drains. You can contact Gary Price (gprice@lex-co.com or 803-785-8634) for neighborhood suggestions or choose a neighborhood near your home.
- Send the neighborhood information along with group’s name, contact information, and the number of people volunteering to Mary HIte at mhite@lex-co.com or 803-785-8201.
- A representative from your group is required to attend a mandatory training session before tagging. No need to worry, this session is easy and will occur when you come to pick up your storm drain tagging kit. What’s in a tagging kit? storm drain tags; glue; latex gloves; instructions; t-shirts
- After tagging your selected neighborhood, return the waiver, any remaining tags, and glue to the Lexington County Public Works Department (440 Ball Park Rd. Lexington, SC 29072). Fill out the follow up survey about the event.
*Note: T-shirts are available on a first come first served basis while supplies last.
