The National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Permit (NPDES), authorized by the Clean Water Act, is a Federal program to control water pollution by regulating sources of pollution. It is administered by each state and enforced in South Carolina by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
The Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium (LCSC), works to assure that each stormwater management program in Lexington County meets the short and long-term requirements of this Permit to ensure safe water for drinking and recreation for the citizens of our County. Now, you can easily help by reporting occurrences that you observe of pollutants being put into the storm drainage system to the Lexington County Public Works Stormwater Division for investigation and elimination. This is important because stormwater does not go to a water treatment facility, but goes untreated directly into the local waterways.
Recently, Lexington County Public Works Stormwaer Division acquired a program entitled IDDE—AGrate Concern to teach the public about Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) and how to recognize it (harmful pollutants entering the storm drainage system) and alert the County Public Works Stormwater Division of it so that it can be addressed. If you are a member of an organization that would like a presentation on this topic, please contact Gary Price, Environmental Coordinator at (803) 785-8634 .
If you suspect that a storm drain or any part of the storm drainage system that includes grates, pipes, culverts boxes and ditches is being used to dump substances that can pollute our waterways please report it using this simple fill-in form by clicking here. Your help can make a critical difference in keeping our waterways safe and clean.
