Educational Outreach

South Carolina Green Steps Schools

Green Steps is a program through the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina (EEASC) designed to help encourage K-12 schools to take steps toward establishing and maintaining model-quality sustainability projects.  Schools qualify for awards when they work with qualified mentors and submit an end-of-year report of students learning, doing, and teaching others about their project(s). Common school projects include classroom composting, school rain barrels, starting a school recycling program, or doing a schoolyard litter clean-up.

Some members of the LCSC act as mentors for the Green Steps program.  Mentors are representatives from the public and private sectors who offer guidance in planning, executing, and judging school projects. Through this mentorship opportunity, the LCSC can reach a crucial demographic of County citizens: our youth.  They are the next generation who will need to have all the knowledge and tools available to them to help keep our waterways clean and healthy!

If you are an educator interested in you school becoming a part of Green Steps, check out the EEASC website to learn more!

Water Quality Presentations

Do you want to know more about water quality in Lexington County? Is your group trying to find ways to make your organization more environmentally friendly? A member of the Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium can come to your school, civic group, or neighborhood association to talk about one (or all!) of the following topics:

  • Water quality & non-point source pollution
  • Stormwater & how storm drains work
  • Pesticides, herbicides, & fertilizers
  • Laws, grants, and other state/federal regulations (MS4 permit, 303d list, etc.)

Children using the Watershed/Nonpoint Source EnviroScape. The LCSC owns this model and is used to help demonstrate how water pollution affects our watersheds and local waterways.

All of these topics and more can be modified to fit K-12 understanding and state curriculum. Because some of our staff work as Green Steps mentors, the LCSC has a variety of educational lesson plans and materials available to children and teens. From games to models, there is something for every age!
